THE MAIL SERIES

The Initiator–inquirer Method:

5 Emails. One Framework.

Each email delivers one focused concept you can apply immediately — no fluff, just clinical depth rooted in the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy.

1

WHY SPEAKER–LISTENER ISN'T ENOUGH

The gap between knowing the technique and having the capacity to use it under stress — and why that distinction changes your intervention.

1

2

TEACHING COUPLES TO SELF-REVEAL WITHOUT BLAME

How to coach partners to access vulnerability instead of criticism — and the specific language that makes that shift possible.

2

3

COACHING THE INQUIRER ROLE UNDER STRESS

Why listening is a regulation skill, not a passive one — and how to help partners stay curious without losing themselves.

3

4

WHERE COUPLES GET STUCK

Using developmental continuums to identify where couples actually are — so you intervene at the right level, not the ideal one.

4

5

BRINGING IT INTO YOUR CLINICAL WORK

How to introduce, sustain, and adapt the method — and what to do when it breaks down.

Timothy C. Donovan, LCSW-C Couples Therapist | Trainer | Founder, Bmore Couples Center

My work is grounded in the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, which integrates differentiation, attachment theory, and neuroscience. The Developmental Model sees couples not as broken relationships to fix, but as stuck — with the capacity to grow both individually and together. It recognizes that conflict isn't just about communication skills; it's about each partner's internal world and how vulnerabilities rise up under stress. When handled well, conflict becomes the greatest source of connection and being known.

I also draw on Gottman, PACT, Discernment Counseling, and AANE work with neurodivergent couples — but the Developmental Model gives me the framework that makes sense of when and how to use these tools.
